Agility T-Test
The Agility T-Test is a widely used assessment of multi-directional agility, incorporating forward sprinting, lateral shuffling, and backpedalling. Using AxIT Timing Gates, you can capture precise overall times, and optional split gates provide deeper insight into each movement segment.
-
Mark out a T-shape with four markers:
-
Start position at the base with Timing Gate.
-
Centre point 10 yards (or metres) straight ahead.
-
Left point 5 yards left of centre.
-
Right point 5 yards right of centre.
-
-
Optional: Place additional gates at Left and Right positions to capture split times during the side shuffles.
Cues: “Start at the base of the T. Sprint forward to the middle cone, shuffle left to touch the line, shuffle all the way across to the right line, shuffle back to the middle, then run backwards to the start. Move as quickly as possible, keeping good body control.”
Procedure:
Step 1 – Set up the gates
-
Place the Start/Finish Gate at the base of the T. Optional: Add split gates at the left and right markers.
Step 2 – Configure the app
-
In the Drill Category menu, select Change of Direction. In Drill Type select T-Test Select your trigger type (Standard or In-Beam) as shown on the selection screen. Tap Next to continue.
Step 3 – Connect the gates
-
Power on all Timing Gates. Tap Scan in the app. Press the right-hand button on the gate you want to be the Master Gate (usually the Start/Finish Gate). Follow prompts to connect any additional gates. Use the Flash button to confirm gate order if needed.
Step 4 – Run the trial
- Tap Start Trial in the app. Athlete begins behind the Start/Finish Gate (A).
- On the start:
-
-
Sprint forward 10 yards to the middle cone or marker.
-
Shuffle left 5 yards to touch the line at marker or gate.
-
Shuffle 10 yards right to touch the line at marker or gate..
-
Shuffle left 5 yards back to the middle cone or marker.
-
Backpedal to the Start/Finish Gate.
-
-
Timing starts when the athlete exits the beam or crosses the Start Gate and stops automatically when they return through it.
-
Optional split times are recorded if additional gates are placed at left or right marker.
Step 5 – Save and review results
-
Tap Save Trial to record or Redo Trial to retry. Use the Leaderboard icon to review results and compare athletes. Switch athletes quickly using the drop-down menu or Next button.
Note: To avoid directional bias, best practice is to test both directions:
-
One trial shuffling left first.
-
One trial shuffling right first.
